Fine in gold simulated leather covered boards with red and gilt decorations and text stamped on the spine and front board. The top edge of the text block is stained a yellow-orange. An octavo measuring 9 by 6 3/4 inches. Issued without a dust jacket; however, the book is contained within a fine gold, paper covered slip case with a paper label on one side. The Hobbit is the first story in Tolkien's grand work. With illustrations by the author. 317 pages of text followed by the map mentioned above. A very handsome and collectable copy with no prior ownership markings of any kind. The first two pages following the table of contents are illustrated with a map of "The Desolation of Smaug" and the rear two free end papers are illustrated with a map of Wilderland.
