Some Background Information on The American Folkways Series


Credit for the inspiration and initial development of The American Folkways Series belongs completely to the efforts of Erskine Caldwell.  He used his own popularity as a novelist as a bargaining chip to "encourage" the publisher Duell, Sloan and Pearce to produce the series under Caldwell's editorial eye.   A total of 28 books in the series were published.  Each book in the series focused on a unique, different area of the country each provoking an appreciation of regional consciousness and preserving the historical basis for the folkways of America.  For those wishing to know more about this series we can refer readers to the May, 1998 issue of Firsts Magazine for a 13 page article on the subject.  The list which follows represents only a short sampling of the books in the entire series.

    Vestal, Stanley:  Short Grass Country.  New York: Duell, Sloan & Pearce, 1941. First Edition, First printing. Fine in decorated beige cloth covered boards with a gilt on brown title block on the spine. An octavo of 8 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches. In a good, price clipped dust jacket with heavy wear and narrow chips to the folds and with and wear and rubbing to the upper and lower edges of the panels. The third volume in the American Folkways Series and one of the most difficult volumes to locate in the series. This series was edited and managed by Erskin Caldwell. 304 pages including an index. A very clean and neat copy with no prior ownership markings of any kind.

    Callahan, North:  Smoky Mountain Country.  New York: Duell, Sloan & Pearce, 1952. Reprint of August, 1952. Fine in blue cloth covered boards with gilt on black title blocks on the spine and the Folkway Series logo on the front board. A small octavo of 8 3/8 by 5 5/8 inches with map end sheets. In a very good+, unclipped dust jacket with rubbing to the ends of the spine area, slight fading to the spine area, scuffing to the front panel and shallow chipping to the ends of the spine area. The 24th volume in the Folkways of America Series which focuses on the area stretching from the Tennessee/Virginia border south to Georgia and taking in the eastern side of Tennessee. 257 pages including an index.
