An ex-library copy in very good condition in red cloth covered boards with gilt text and rules on the spine and with the top edge of the text block gilt. A small quarto of 9 3/8 by 6 1/4 inches with professionally repaired, 4" tear to the cloth over the front joint and to the front hinge and a repaired bump to the lower tip of the front board. The typical library markings appear the front paste down, table of contents and the rear paste down. Without a dust jacket, but protected in a clear acetate cover. One of only 1,000 copies printed. The title page goes on to read: "The Life and Adventures of an Indian fighter, mail coach driver, miner, pioneer cattleman, participant in the Powder River expedition, survivor of the Hay Field fight, associate of Jim Bridger and Chief Washakie". 378 pages including an index and text.     Hafen, LeRoy R.:  The Mountain Men and the Fur Trade of the Far West biographical sketches of the participants by scholars of the subject and with introductions by the editor.  Glendale, Calif.: The Arthur H. All ten volumes of this complete set are in near fine to fine condition in light brown cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spines. Each is a small quarto measuring 9 1/2 by 6 inches with the top edges of the text blocks trimmed and stained brown the fore edges of the text blocks are untrimmed. Only a few of the volumes suffer no more than light rubbing of the cloth at the heads and heels of the spines. Each volume contains approximately 400 pages and is illustrated with maps, and reproductions of contemporary works of art. Each volume has a stamped, prior owner's name and address on the first free end page. With the exception of volume x, that prior owner has also noted in the inside margin of each title page the place, date and price he paid for each volume. None of the volumes have their original, plain brown dust jackets. The first nine volumes, published between 1965 and 1972, contain the biographies of some 300 active, male participants in the fur trade. Volume X is the bibliography and index for the entire set. Very good in blue, ribbed cloth covered boards with gold text stamping on the spine and with the top edge of the spine gilt. A small quarto measuring 9 1/2 by 6 1/4 inches with light rubbing and wear to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine and to the tips of the boards. There is an attractive prior owner's engraved book plate on the front paste down. Without a dust jacket. One of only 1,276 copies printed. Although unstated, this title is part of the American Waterway Series I. 303 pages including an index, appendices and text. Illustrated with a photographic frontispiece,maps and reproductions of 23 early photographs. Howes considers this title "quite scarce". In an article in the April, 1909 American Historical Review, James K. Hosmer stated that there is "no better account, from the inside, of steamboating." And, the revised bibliography by Robert A. Clark and Patrick J. Brunet of The Arthur H. Clark Company publications says of this title: "The recollections of Merrick are extremely divers, and include information touching on a variety of subjects, from economic and industrial to historical and ethnological."
