The cloth at the head of the spine is rubbed and slightly worn with hints of fraying and there is a prior owner's name on the front paste down. The full title reads: "Proceedings of the New York State Historical Association Third Annual Meeting with Constitution and By-Laws and List of Members...." This 74 page book contains articles on Fort Ticonderoga, Ethan Allen, Lord Howe, the Legend of Duncan Campbell, Montcalm, and the Evolution of American Free Government. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Sir William Johnson and two photographs.

  • Allyn, Charles:  The Battle of Groton Heights: A collection of Narratives, Official Reports, Records, Etc. of the Storming of Fort Griswold.....  New London, Conn.: Self-published, 1882. Revised and Enlarged Edition. Good in its original green cloth covered boards with black end sheets. The spine is decorated with gilt text and a gilt image of the Groton Heights Memorial. The front board is decorated with a bird's eye view of the ramparts of the fort. Much of the green coating on the boards has been nibbled away by insects. The front and rear hinges and joints are tight and without any weakness. The binding remains strong. The cloth at the head and heel of the spine is rubbed and the cloth at the lower tip of the front board is worn through. There are no prior ownership markings of any kind in this volume. Laid-in near the front of the book is a leaf printed on both sides advertising the Centennial Medal commemorating the Battle of Groton Heights. The full title reads: "The Battle of Groton Heights: A collection of Narratives, Official Reports, Records, Etc. of the Storming of Fort Griswold, the Massacre of its garrison, and the burning of New London by British Troops Under the Command of Benedict Arnold, on the Sixth of September, 1781." With an introduction by William W. Harris. Only 100 copies of the original printing of this title were produced in 1870 under the name William Harris. This edition was revised from the first edition by Charles Allyn with additional notes and enlarged. Both volumes of this two volume set are are in very good- condition in brick red cloth covered boards with gilt text and black decorations on the spines and with black decorations and borders on the front and rear boards. Both are small quarto of 9 by 5 3/4 inches with the cloth at the heads and heels of the spines rubbed and worn as are the tips of the boards. Both volumes have a stamp on the first free end page reading: "discarded from the Bangor Theological Seminary" as well as two book plates on the front paste downs from two prior owners. The front and rear hinges for both volume are cracked yet the bindings are hold and strong. Volume I contains 542 pages including an index. Volume II contains 544 pages including an index. Illustrated with a number of portraits of individuals noted in the volumes. This publication contains historical documentation (to and from members of the Van Rensselaer family) for events occurring in the State of New York from the original Dutch settlement, the French and Indian War, American Revolution, the War of 1812 and up to the close of the Civil War and ending around 1871.     De Forest, John W.:  History Of The Indians Of Connecticut From The Earliest Known Period to 1850..  Hartford: Wm. Jas. Hamersley, 1851. First Edition. Very good in original brown cloth covered boards with gilt text and gilt boxes on the spine. An octavo of 8 1/4 by 5 inches with the cloth over the joints fractured, but the binding remains tight and strong as the hinges are tight. The cloth at the edges of the boards is worn and worn through at the tips of the boards. An early prior owner's name appears on the second free end page and a more recent prior owner stamped his name on the front paste down. There is a faint, but broad dampness stain from the first free end page to page XXVI just before the first page of text. The text block is quite clean and fresh with few signs of foxing and any age toning only appearing in the appendix (the last 10 pages of the book). 509 pages including an index, appendix and text. Illustrated with a fold-out frontispiece map of the State of Connecticut, 6 engraved plates and 4 vignettes. Published with the sanction and support of the Connecticut Historical Society. Connecticut native, Thomas Fanning, provides this narrative of his life at sea during the American Revolution beginning in May of 1778 and ending with his return to New York in November of 1783 after the signing of the Treaty of Paris which brought the war to its final end. During his time at sea, Fanning served under John Paul Jones and experienced the battle with the HMS Serapis.

    Painter, Thomas:  Autobiography Of Thomas Painter Relating His Experiences During the War Of The Revolution.  n.p. No City Stated: Privately Published, (1910). First Edition. Very good+ in full, limp, dark brown, leather (Levant Grain) with the title stamped in gilt text on the front board. A small quarto of 9 1/2 by 6 1/4 inches rebacked retaining the majority of the original leather back strip with light wear and rubbing to the edges of the boards, a prior owner's book plate on the front paste down (Library of The Society Of Colonial Wars) with a number of uncut pages in the preliminaries and termination pages. Very uncommon in book form. 105 pages of text and illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author at age 36 and a plate of Painter's birthplace and home in West Haven, Connecticut from a photograph. Painter server two short term enlistments with the Continental Army witnessing the Battle of Long Island and the army's escape across the East River to Manhattan. When his enlistment came to an end he went back to his home only to witness the British attack on New Haven. He tired of Army life and went to sea. But his service with various enterprises of privateering and as a mate on board a cargo vessel and eventually a captain of his own vessel netted him three captures by the British and two imprisonments on the British prison hulks. It was a separate branch of the courts system in many European countries.
